When and Where to See the Sardines
The sardines live in the waters off Panagsama Beach, typically about 50-100 meters from shore. You don't need a boat, expensive tours, or special timing — just grab a mask and snorkel, walk into the water, and swim out.
Best time: Early morning (6-8am) offers the calmest water, best visibility, and ideal lighting for photos. The sardines are present all day, but mornings are magical.

Your First Sardine Run Experience
Entering the water at Panagsama, you'll swim over a rocky reef — wear reef shoes if you're not comfortable with this. About 5 minutes of swimming from shore, you'll start seeing them. At first, small groups. Then, suddenly, you're surrounded.
The sardines form massive schools that can stretch for dozens of meters. They'll swirl around you, sometimes close enough to touch (but please don't). When predators appear — usually tuna or trevally — the school explodes into a tornado formation that's absolutely breathtaking.
Practical Tips for the Sardine Run
- Cost: Free! Just bring your own snorkel gear or rent from any dive shop (around 200-300 PHP for the day)
- Bring: Reef-safe sunscreen, underwater camera, reef shoes
- Don't bring: Touching or chasing the sardines disrupts them
- How long: You can snorkel as long as you want, but 1-2 hours is typical
Combine It With Diving
If you're a certified diver, experiencing the sardines from below is a completely different (and arguably more spectacular) perspective. Several dive shops along Panagsama offer sardine run dives for around 1,500-2,000 PHP including equipment.
